One of the best tips for weight loss relates to how we think about the weight loss process. Many will identify weight loss as being on a diet. I urge against using the word diet, as this word conjures up images of hunger, suffering and restriction which I am sure you will agree are not very positive images to hold onto. When I help clients to lose weight, the first thing I do is suggest the term “Healthy Eating Program”. This term creates a much more positive mental image and sets the foundation for successful fat loss.

One of the key tips for weight loss is in understanding the importance of planning your weight loss program. Before jumping in feet first, sit down and plan out exactly how much weight you would like to lose and by when. Be realistic with this. For example, expecting to lose 10lbs within 2 weeks is unreasonable. A general guide is that you should aim to lose 1 to 2lbs weekly. This is a safe rate to lose weight and is more likely to result in the weight staying off in the long term. Remember that the top 5% understand that losing weight is not a quick fix.

Once the over all weight loss has been identified within a given time frame, I also recommend identifying key targets along the way. So for example, a goal of a 4lb weight loss could be set for week 2 of the program.

This process serves a very important purpose in that it starts to focus the mind on the task in hand.

Understand that our mind is the most valuable muscle we have. Once the minds power is recognised it can be used to drive us forward to success. When weight loss is the goal it helps to know when the end is in sight. In addition, the achievement of short term targets serves to bolster self belief and reaffirm that everything is happening as it should be. Conversely, if weight loss is not occurring, the short term targets act to highlight this which provides opportunity for self assessment and implementing new weight loss strategies.
