This past weekend I participated in Chicago’s annual Taste of Chicago festival, where every summer dozens of Chicago’s restaurant participate in a week long eating and tasting of food, deserts, and drinks. I have fond memories of going to Grant Park with family or friends and sharing slices of pizza and fried dough. But this year it felt different, the excitement and overall enthusiasm of the event seems to be gone, and for a second year violence erupted during the event.
As much as I enjoy annual events and festivals, it feels as if the practice of and the participation of tradition seems to be fading. One day events like the “Taste of Chicago” will no longer exist.
So, Hobo is asking, are community traditions fading or is the way communities and cities connect with one another changing? Will there come a day when the idea of know thy neighbor no longer exist?
