As we all know, on Tuesday January 12th Port-au-Prince, Haiti suffered a 7.0 earthquake that has left the country in turmoil.
The only thoughts I ever had about Haiti were negative ones. I thought only about it being poor and desolate with no beauty at all until one of my fellow bloggers, Kitten heels, took a trip there and shared her experience. She described it as being beautiful and although in need of much work she said she could see a glimmer of “the Pearl of the Caribbean”. That has forever changed the way I think of Haiti.
Unfortunately, even though my thoughts have changed the reality is that most of Haiti's 9 million people are desperately poor, and after years of political instability the country has no real construction standards. It has been estimated that about 60 percent of buildings are shoddily built and unsafe under normal circumstances. This 7.0 magnitude earthquake has destroyed just about all structures that existed, including the National Palace and the U.N. peacekeeping headquarters. Haiti doesn’t have the man power, the facilities, or the wherewithal to even begin to handle this type of devastation. Unfortunately it’s inevitable that the death toll will continue to mount.
Because Haiti is one of the poorest countries in our nation they have always needed our prayers but now they will need them more then ever. Please, please pray for Haiti.
