Chicago Cares Celebration of Service 2011

This coming Saturday January 15, 2010, is the Chicago Cares Celebration of Service In Honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. From the website:

Volunteer to honor Dr. King on January 15

Stand up and serve to honor Dr. King with Chicago Cares on January 15!

More than 3,000 caring Chicagoans will join together to be inspired by keynote speaker Chris Gardner before fanning out all over the city to meet the needs of seniors, adults with development disabilities, students, schools and agencies. Will you join us to declare that you care?

Celebration of Service is also a fundraiser for Chicago Cares, raising donations to sustain and grow the 215 volunteer projects we manage each month. Learn more at www.chicagocares.org.

I’ve helped out with this event a number of times over the years. The keynote speaker is always someone special. This year it is Chris Gardner. I remember a few years back catching a side glimpse of then Senator, now President Barack Obama and Mayor Richard Daley as they entered backstage.

Many of the projects are painting, one of the things I’m not too crazy about, so I usually help out in the capacity of Roadie which is one of two specialty volunteer opportunities. The other is Bus Ambassador. Roadies work “behind the scenes”, and are in early and out by 10:00am. The role of the Bus Ambassador is a little more involved and is ideal for a past Roadie who wants to step it up.

One thing that fascinates me about Chicago Cares is their ability to take thousands of people and send them out efficiently. It is something to see. If you’re looking for a great opportunity to serve, register online. I’ll see you there!
