The Portion Plate

Now that the holidays are over, people are getting back on the band wagon for exercise, weight loss and healthier eating.

At work, you are probably starting to see the roll out of Biggest Losers contests, Weight Watchers and Jenny programs, along with wellness programs.

Those same conversations are happening around my company's breakrooms, lunchrooms and water coolers. We have talked about all of the above, but the thing that has caught on and has everyone buzzing is The Portion Plate http://www.theportionplate.com/. A plate is an interactive tool for teaching consumers appropriate food portions.

I know it should be simple, but Americans really have a problem with portion sizes. We assume that because it is bigger, better and supersized, it is the right portion. In actuality, we have an issue with getting the right amount of portions for our size and bodies.

From speaking with people, I know that vegetables are the last thing on their minds. Being a vegetarian, they assume that all I eat are vegetables and what sane person would give up meat. However, vegetarians needs proteins and carbs like everyone else and we actually enjoy them. My dilemma is that I might not get enough iron or Vitamin D. So, using portion control has helped me get the right amount of nutrients, vitamins, proteins and carbs that make me healthier overall.

Take a look at the website, do the interactive quiz and see how portion sizes have changed over the last 20 years. It was amazing and at the same time, almost sickening. I had to really rethink how I eat. If you purchase the plate and use the program, let me know your thoughts.

Good luck.

Peace and Love,
