Although I haven’t gone in a while, I enjoy the theater. I really enjoy all kinds of live performances. Because I’ve made group purchases in the past, I regularly receive mailings about what is coming up. I even receive invitations to special previews and events. I wasn’t able to make the most recent one which would have included the opportunity to read the script of a new play and ask questions of the Director. I was though able to take in a preview for Shrek the Musical last year. It was a blast, we even got Shrek ears. I am a fan of the movies and plan to work the play into the budget.
Some of my favorite theater memories are from the Black Ensemble Theater. If you enjoy great music and an intimate setting, this is the place for you! The last play that I saw there was based on the Stax record label. It was great with soulful acting and singing. One of my least favorite theater experiences was The Color Purple. I liked it, but not as much as I thought I would.
Another fond theater memory is of The Lion King. So great that I saw it three times. Between the heartwarming and fun story and the “animals”, I couldn’t get enough. I’m considering seeing it again in the fall.
One of my favorite performances was Too Hot To Handel – The Jazz Gospel Messiah. I think I’ve seen it 3 times, but missed it this year. The show includes opera, jazz, and gospel all rolled into one powerful experience. One of the standout performances of the show is the piano solo by one of the jazz musician. It is always outstanding.
I’ve mentioned some of my favorites, but I have many more. Chicago and the surrounding suburbs also have many more theater and performance options. Here’s info on just a handful of upcoming events and performances.
