Aspire before you Expire
Life does stare us the right way, but we fight it to do what we think would impress others, friends, family etc..
We have to know it doesn't matter what we do to impress; the world will never be pleased.
People will call you names, especially if it is not to their liking, names that are hurtful like, un-ambitious or lazy to name a few.
Sounds crazy but money will not spout your happiness, yes it helps, but true happiness comes from your love for what you aspire.

Hobo’s Question of the Day:
Hobo is asking this question because some time ago I found myself dissatisfied with my current job despite the fact that it has reasonable pay and benefits. I found myself not feeling appreciated or encouraged to challenge myself. I went back to school and completed a degree thinking that it would give me better insight or help me make a decision about changing my career or finding another job. But months later I am still complacent about the entire matter and still confused about what will be the better decision.
So, Hobo is asking is it best to stay in a job that seems empty and lacks challenge because it is the safer decision: or should one take a chance and venture into a new career or job despite the risk and state of the economy?
Looking for answers,
Hobo

LOVE LONG DISTANCE
In the world of cyberspace people are hooking up in many ways. They talk in chat rooms, instant message, texting and email. My thought on this is that as long as people are communicating then things can flow. There are people that look at each other everyday and barely speak in passing, so why couldn’t non face to face interaction work?
I actually have a very good friend that met her husband over the phone lines. She was hooked up by her cousin with a friend of his. They spoke daily and when they finally met it was instant chemistry because they had already gotten to know each other. They got married after 3 months of dating and it is still going strong 5 years later. Of course they were both older and maybe were ready for that commitment but it worked.
In reflecting, this might be a better solution to “dating”. People don’t have that pressure of putting on airs. Over the phone people tend to be who they really are, you take a lot of pressure out of the physical aspect of it and I think that if a person is willing to communicate with you without the physical they are more likely to be genuine. Lets face it there is no need to fake the front to someone you don’t see on a regular bases.
Let me know what you think…can it work or not?

PPP's Tip of the week
by Emily Hsieh
It’s important to remember to show your keyboard some love every now and then both for the sake of good hygiene and to ensure it functions properly. Those keys take quite a beating everyday, and all the little crevices are excellent at trapping things like dust and hair, and if you ever eat near your computer, it’s easy to wind up with sticky surfaces and crumbs buried between the cracks. Ew, right? Here, step-by-step instructions to get your keyboard in tip top shape.
Shut down your PC, and unplug the mouse, discs or CDs, USB drives or anything else that’s protruding from your machine. Carefully, turn the keyboard (or your entire laptop, as the case may be) upside down and give it a gentle shake to release any dusty build-up that might be lurking between the keys.
Use a can of compressed air (available at just about any electronics store) to blow off residual debris around and under all the nooks and crannies. Alternatively, the hose of a vacuum cleaner works too.
Put a couple drops of isopropyl alcohol on a Q-tip and run it around the edges of your keys to get them squeaky clean. The cotton swab should be only slightly damp—not wet—dripping liquid into your keyboard is (obviously) a bad thing!
Lastly, give the whole thing a once over with a dry, lint-free cloth, and let it air dry for a few minutes before using it (never turn on your machine until you’re positive the keys are completely dry). And between in-depth cleanings, one of my favorite tricks is to use the sticky part of a Post-It note to run between rows of keys to pick up dust.

CAN YOU RELATE?
Or should I wait on destiny
To decide for me the path I take
Should I keep moving or should I wait?
Decisions, Decisions we all must make
Should I call it dumb luck or should I call it fate.
We all reach a point when we have to make choices
Should I trust my instinct or listen to the voices
Of my sister, brother, parents and friends
Who all have opinions of how things should end
Or should I listen to the little voice that wakes my intuition
The little voice that gets my attention
When I struggle with just what to do
With life's list of things to do
On my list there are aspirations, dreams, and career
Am I on the right path is my life's vision clear
Should I tweak it a little cause life right now is a mess?
Or should I leave it as is cause situations are test?
Eventually all will be back on course
Just as I have dreamed it before
If the road back is long and I grow weak
Let me find that perfect peace
Knowing that I have done all that I can
And at the end of the journey, I can stand
Firmly believing that I have tried my best
Withstood the situations and past the test
Achieved some goals and missed a few
There is nothing left to say or do
Decision, decisions, we all must make
Some things were dumb luck and other where fate.

Fluffy

Fluffy…is what I consider myself…and all the other women who are beautifully made with a couple of extra pounds here and there! Lately, I’ve seen a blog that discusses that “Fat African-American women” are man-less simply because of their weight. Now at that point I thought to myself ….I’ve been fluffy, pleasantly plump, chunky, and as the Wii Fit says “obese” half of my life, and never ever have I had a problem with the man population.
If I may say so half of the African-American women I know who are Married are FLUFFY….VERY FLUFFY, and their husbands seem to be in marital bliss. Now I can’t say that the marital bliss comes from having an obese wife, nor can I say that unhappy marriages come from having a fit wife.
But what I can say is do not generalize Single women solely for body shape…because Personality can also be a great factor.
Recently I went on a trip and stopped in Michigan City to do some shopping, and I saw several couples. Some of those couples included African-American men with very, very, very Fluffy women who were of other ethnicities. So it’s not the weight that turns some men off, it could be the personality or the lack thereof?

Good-Better-Best......
I just recently had a conversation about my weight with two dear friends who did not hold back. As I thought about what they said along with the charge from the speaker, I concluded that my eating habits are barely good. No wonder I struggle. I’d probably lose weight just by always making good food and exercise choices. Imagine where going for better, best better choices would take me!
So how would these food and exercise choices look?
Good – canned vegetables, Better – frozen vegetables, Best – fresh vegetables, Better - organic fresh vegetables.
Good – aerobic exercise 2x per week, Better – aerobic exercise 3x per week, Best – aerobic exercise 3x and lift weights 2x per week, Better – aerobic exercise 4x and lift weights 2x week.
This looks like a plan. I think I’ll give it a try.

Progress Report
In my quest to lose weight, I have done things I wouldn’t normally do in the name of exercise. Lately, I have been working out to Jillian Michaels “30 Day Shred” video. Let me tell you it is killer, but I have seen great results in 18 days. The bad thing is that it is repetitive and you have to do it every day to see results, but it is only 20 minutes and you don’t have to go back to the gym after this workout. You are literally panting and wanting to shut the tape off or break the DVD player. Just think about how you waste 20 minutes each and every day and then how these 20 minutes can change your life. That is what gets me out of the bed at 5:00am to plop in the DVD. As I write in my journal about my progress, I am truly happy with the small changes and results. This is what keeps me doing the tape day in and day out. Also, knowing that I have kicked butt for 20 minutes feels really good and knowing that summer shopping season is around the corner is an added bonus!!
Due to this tape, my love handles are gone and it has only been 18 days. I am down another 6 pounds and my belly is noticeably flatter. The best part is that the tape was only $10.00 at Target.
If you are looking to get healthy and shaped up by Memorial Day, this is the tape for you. Let me know how you progress if you try the tape.

PPP's Tip of the Week
Heart Healthy Tips courtesy of the Franklin Institute
Getting, being & staying healthy is an absolute must. Below are a couple of easy things to do to begin heading in that direction if you aren't already.
Everyday Heart Health Tips
If you're not convinced about the need to develop an exercise program for your life, you can at least try following some of these tips in your everyday routine. Take advantage of any opportunity for exercise. Try some today.
1) Take the stairs instead of an elevator or escalator at school or the mall. Just start with one flight. Soon, you'll be ready for two.
2) Park your car at the far end of the parking lot. The short walk to and from the store or school helps your heart.
3) If you ride a bus or subway, get off a stop before your destination. Walk the rest of the way.
4) If you can, spend a few minutes of your lunch break taking a stroll around the campus grounds. It should help you stay awake after lunch.
5) Think of housework as an extra chance to exercise. Vacuuming briskly can be a real workout.
6) Mowing the lawn, pulling weeds, and raking leaves are chores that can be done yourself as a chance to exercise.
7) If you have a dog, think of the dog as an exercise machine with fur. A brisk walk with the dog is good for both of your hearts. Make it a part of your daily routine.
8) If you have a family, schedule an after-dinner walk. Make it quality time.
So remember move that body!

Hobo’s Question of the Day:
A couple of days later the young lady came to my apartment and asked if I was the one who called the police, and if I were she wanted to thank me for “saving her life”. She went on to explain that this particular fight had gotten really bad and her nose was fractured in the incident. But she also mentioned that this was not the first time he had fractured her nose and despite the severity of the last fight; she stated that she was not “ready” to leave him. During the conversation she appeared more concerned with the possibility that after his release from jail he would be upset with her and not return home and not concerned that if he is upset; that he might hurt her again after his release from jail.
So, Hobo is asking is there anything more that a person can do or is there anything a person can do to help someone who seems content with a relationship that involves so much violence and hurt and could only hold a future filled with more pain?

Sometimes we do need to cry!

Last night I cried
And it felt so good
It cleansed my heart
And soothed my soul
The tears started to flow
And I didn't know why
But somehow it transitioned
To the emancipation of my life
Trying hard to be strong
I broke myself down
The more pain I held within
The more pain I found
My greatest fear
Was showing emotional distress
So I used my mind to protect it
Like my hearts personal bullet proof vest
Held in my emotions
Didn't want people to label me weak
Realized behind closed doors
Nobody had to see me weep
The size of each tear grew
As they held a heavy weight
Heavy for my failures
My fears
My shame
My heartbreaks
My lies
Past cries
People I've hurt
The ones who hurt me
For all these reasons
Last night I cried
I had to let it go
Let go of everything
I decided to forgive them
I decided to forgive ME
As my pain filled tears
Ran down my cheeks
And dropped to the floor
Out my body the pain seeped
And my shame was put to sleep
Every tear was a liquid representation
Of my hearts dedication
To heal my inner wounds
And rid tribulation
Crying never felt so good
Thought tears were for the weak
But now I understand
What a tear really means
It's something like a bridge
Linking your emotional states
If you're strong enough to walk it
You'll reach a better place
All the times I held them in
I wish then I would have understood
But its ok, I'm at ease
Cause last night I cried
And it felt so good

Proud Mom
Now some of you might say what’s so great about that? Those of you that have children will be able to relate to my response. This whole Navy thing has been the very first time that I have witnessed my son show so much excitement and motivation! I spent last weekend with him and he shared his desire to go to Japan with me….he articulated such a clear well thought out plan that I almost cried.
Some parents are lucky in that they get to see all of what they are investing into their child pay off immediately by the grades they get in school or by their emotional well being. Some of us don’t get that pay off immediately and all we do is continue with the investment and pray.
Well, I have begun to see my investment!! Please don’t misunderstand me when I say investment because I’m not just talking about the financial portion. I’m talking about the molding, the rearing, the pulling your hair out, the constant reminding, the guidance, the unconditional love that you have for your child even when at any given moment you may not like them very much. I’m talking about the 24 hours a day seven days a week worry, the concern that you have made bad choices because things aren’t going well. I’m talking about the FEAR that maybe your child is going to become a statistic and not a good one.
If you could see me right now I’m dancing!! Not because I think my son is now going to live a perfect life….NO SUCH THING! But, now I'm beginning to see all of what his Dad and I poured in is actually paying off. I will still worry but some of that pressure has been lifted….I’m just a proud Mom that can’t stop grinning!!

PPP's Tip of the Week
.jpg)
PPP's Tip of the Week is about Women & Weights courtesy of Alicia Kirschenheiter. Alicia is an American Council on Exercise Certified Personal Trainer and a Weight & Lifestyle Management consultant. The owner of Evolution Personal Training Inc. in New York is also the author of Oscar & Otis, Fat Fighters.
10 Reasons Women NEED to Lift Weights
by Alicia Kirschenheiter
In the past few years there has been a barrage of information regarding the importance of strength training for woman, yet whenever I have introduced the idea to any of my female personal training clients, all but a few have looked at me like deer in headlights.
In general, women are still convinced that sticking to the cardio machines is the way to go. In this article, I want to address why as woman, we can no longer fear the weight rack.
1. You Will Lose Body Fat.
The average woman who strength trains two to three times a week for two months will gain nearly two pounds of muscle and will lose 3.5 pounds of fat. Yes I said it, that’s 3.5 pounds. Understand that as lean muscle increases so does your resting metabolism, and in turn you burn more calories all day long. Generally speaking, for each pound of muscle you gain, you burn 35 to 50 more calories each day. Building a higher metabolism is one of the key ingredients to help keep the weight off.
2. You Will Gain Strength Without Bulk.
This is one of my favorite questions: "Will I get big muscles?" Women typically don't gain size from strength training, simply because compared to men we lack the necessary hormones. And ladies let’s make it count! If you are not lifting enough weight to challenge yourself then your efforts may be in vain. Face it, most of us carry bags that weigh more than the weights we are willing to pick up in the gym! So, do 12-15 repetitions and shoot for at least 2 sets twice a week. Remember by the last repetition you should be what I like to call, "comfortable exhausted," meaning you cannot do another repetition with compromising your form the weight has become too heavy.
3. You Will Reduce Your Risk of Heart Disease.
More important than the first 2 reasons – OUR HEALTH is primary. To the surprise of many women, heart disease is our number one killer. Weight training has been noted to improve cardiovascular health in several ways, including lowering LDL ("bad") cholesterol, increasing HDL ("good") cholesterol and lowering blood pressure. When cardiovascular exercise is added, these benefits are maximized.
4. Reduce the Risk of Cancer.
The American Cancer Society estimates that one-third of all cancer deaths are related to nutrition and physical activity factors. Strength training increases your body’s overall development and efficiency. Need I say more?
5. You Will Reduce Your Risk of Diabetes.
Weight training may improve the way the body processes sugar, which may reduce the risk of diabetes. Adult-onset diabetes is a growing problem for women and men. Research indicates that weight training can increase glucose utilization in the body by 23 percent in four months.
6. You Will Reduce Your Risk Of Injury, Back Pain and Arthritis.
Strength training not only builds stronger muscles, but also builds stronger connective tissues and increases joint stability. This acts as reinforcement for the joints and helps prevent injury. Additionally studies have indicated that weight training can ease the pain of osteoarthritis and strengthen joints.
7. You Will Improve Your Attitude and Fight Depression.
Strength training can reduce clinical depression symptoms successfully. Women who strength train commonly report feeling more confident and capable as a result of their program, all important factors in fighting depression. Additionally, woman note feeling more energetic and sleeping better.
8. You Will Be Physically Stronger.
Increasing your strength will make you far less dependent upon others for assistance in daily living. And who doesn’t hate asking for help! Chores will be easier and lifting kids, groceries and laundry will no longer make you feel like you have run the miracle mile. If your maximum strength is increased, daily tasks and routine exercise will be far less likely to cause injury and frankly exhaustion.
9. It Is Never Too Late To Benefit.
Women at any age can begin strength training. Women in their 70s and 80s have built up significant strength through weight training. My recommendation: Seek a professional before starting to help give you direction, perfect your form and get you on a plan to great improvements.
10. Strength Training Will Help You Reach the Long Lean Look You Desire.
And, more importantly, strength training will help you keep this long lean look once you reach your goal. Development of muscle tone, definition and decreased body fat are all benefits of adding a strength training routine.
To Your Health!

Are We Not in the 21st Century?
Then we have a group that doesn’t know how to plug up the coffee pot let alone where the HELL the water goes….
Well if you want to know where I’m going with this….I’m a school teacher in a south suburb and I’m little annoyed with the parenting that’s going on in this community! Now don’t get me wrong…I’m not saying all or most but there’s enough to make a difference if they changed just a little.
In this community School, Education, Adults are not valued…how can you allow your child to miss days of school…months….and years. I know We are thinking it’s not even fathomable to allow Our children to miss the day he/she has to go to the doctor…we send the student for a half day…pick up the missing assignments. But there is a group of parents who don’t send their students to school for ½ of the school year, ok. The school years consist of 176 days….did you hear me? ONE HUNDRED SEVENTY-SIX DAYS. February only has 28 days and we are only in school for 16 and there are some students who will only have attended school for 10…..blowing your mind? Not because he/she is sick, hurt, ill or death..Because I (student) didn’t feel like getting up or parent was tired. Not to mention the tardiness….it’s unbelievable and I work here!
These people are taking the nationality back centuries, if these students are a part of our future…I’m sorry to say but I hope no one slips any hidden contracts in their possession to send our people back into slavery because if they do; they’ll sign it!
These students can’t read, nor write on their grade level and you think if they sent them to school half of the problem could be solved just from repetition but Hell these students don’t see anything…but the videos…and the rest of the Self-hate mess that comes on television or the radio.
The lyrics and the shows are for entertainment and if you were educated you would know...It’s for entertainment….when you are not educated you think you can actually make a life out of jumping and smashing things and calling people ungodly things in a song. I’m just sick of the mess!

Plays and Performances

Although I haven’t gone in a while, I enjoy the theater. I really enjoy all kinds of live performances. Because I’ve made group purchases in the past, I regularly receive mailings about what is coming up. I even receive invitations to special previews and events. I wasn’t able to make the most recent one which would have included the opportunity to read the script of a new play and ask questions of the Director. I was though able to take in a preview for Shrek the Musical last year. It was a blast, we even got Shrek ears. I am a fan of the movies and plan to work the play into the budget.
Some of my favorite theater memories are from the Black Ensemble Theater. If you enjoy great music and an intimate setting, this is the place for you! The last play that I saw there was based on the Stax record label. It was great with soulful acting and singing. One of my least favorite theater experiences was The Color Purple. I liked it, but not as much as I thought I would.
Another fond theater memory is of The Lion King. So great that I saw it three times. Between the heartwarming and fun story and the “animals”, I couldn’t get enough. I’m considering seeing it again in the fall.
One of my favorite performances was Too Hot To Handel – The Jazz Gospel Messiah. I think I’ve seen it 3 times, but missed it this year. The show includes opera, jazz, and gospel all rolled into one powerful experience. One of the standout performances of the show is the piano solo by one of the jazz musician. It is always outstanding.
I’ve mentioned some of my favorites, but I have many more. Chicago and the surrounding suburbs also have many more theater and performance options. Here’s info on just a handful of upcoming events and performances.

But an especially heartfealt congratulations to the African-American winners.....
Monique - Best Supporting Actress for Precious
Roger Ross Williams - Best Documentary Short for Music by Prudence
Geoffrey Fletcher - Best Adapted Screenplay for Precious
Much is made of winners and what they gain by winning. This has not always been the case for African-American winners. Let's hope the tides are turning and we will see more brilliant work for these three and all the other creative, talented and artistic African Americans waiting in the wings.
Also, because I am all about the girl, Congratulations to Kathryn Bigelow for being the first woman to win Best Director! As Monique said it best, politics did not win out over brilliant performance.

Life is a Gift!
How often do we get so caught up in the day in and day out grind that we forget to just cherish who we are and our loved ones? Even if we don’t mean to do it intentionally it still happens. Why does it take hearing about an untimely death or any type of devastation to make us put things in perspective and check our priorities??
I recently got back in touch with a sibling that I had not seen in about 5 years and had not spoken to in at least two years! I started thinking about how I would hate for the next time we see each other occur because of a funeral or some other terrible situation. I decided that all those things that happened in the past is where I should leave them because clearly none of us are perfect! I admit that we are not talking on the phone everyday but we are emailing each other at least once a week and that is far better than what had been occurring, which was no communication at all.
So I challenge everyone that reads this blog today to reach out to someone that you haven’t seen or spoken with in a long time. A family member or friend; even if you just drop them an email or a text to say you are thinking about them…..It’s time we begin to Cherish Life because it goes by quickly and no one wants to have regrets!

The Eat Clean Diet
On this journey to good health, I have discovered the idea of eating clean. Now, I have read that this phenomenon is nothing new, and honestly it’s basic common sense. It’s a way of eating that eliminates overly processed foods. Yes, that includes the white flour, white sugar and junk food items that so many of us swear by daily. It forces you to prepare fresh, healthy meals. When I first started the journey, I had no idea if I would be able to commit to such a thing with my busy schedule. However, it has been amazing! I’ve gotten a few cookbooks and have turned my kitchen into a 7th grade science lab. It’s been so much fun, and it works! It’s been 2 weeks and I’m down 10 pounds. More importantly, I feel energetic and my skin is glowing. Now, some of that credit belongs to my juicer, but the combination has been wonderful.
To learn more about eating clean, take a peak at Tosca Reno’s, The Eat Clean Diet Recharged. It’s far from a diet, but a way of life that I think I can live with.
I will keep you posted.

Earthquakes, Famine, and all else in between
It is really hard with so much despair
I can't see you but I know you're there
Child Loss, Job Loss, lack of self respect
All the money is spent before I get my paycheck
I know in my heart that you do care
I CAN'T SEE YOU GOD BUT I KNOW YOU ARE THERE
This is dedicated to all those that have suffered during these rough times. The state of the economy has touched those that we know near and far. Hold tight to the one thing that no one can take away....YOUR FAITH!

Are you ready to retire?

10 Signs You're Not Ready to Retire by Althea Chang
Sponsored by Fidelity Investments
Hopes for an economic upswing may rekindle ideas of a blissful retirement, but when will you really be ready?
Nearly a third of working people aged 55 or older have less than $10,000 saved for retirement, according to a 2009 Retirement Confidence Survey. But even if you’ve saved more than that, deciding when to retire has gotten more tricky.
Our financial futures are uncertain, 65 is no longer the default retirement age and it can be difficult to determine how much you’ll need in order to really enjoy retirement (or at the very least live comfortably).
So if you’re approaching your twilight years, here are some signs that you might not be ready to retire just yet.
You Haven’t Done the Math
Scenario: If you haven’t made lists or done any calculations to figure out just how you’ll cover day-to-day expenses, travel and holidays, you’ll have to give more thought to how much savings you’ll need to make it through retirement.
What you can do: If you’re among this group, or you just want to get a handle on what you’ll need to retire, there are plenty of online tools you can use to figure out how much you’ll need and what kind of lifestyle your money will afford you when you do decide to retire.
You Need to Play Catch-Up
Scenario: If you haven’t socked enough away in your 401(k), don’t panic. You have some options.
What you can do: If you’re 50 or older, you can make catch-up contributions of an additional $5,500 – that’s on top of the maximum of $16,500 if you’re under 50 - to your 401(k) or IRA to make sure you’re on track to retire when you want to, notes Kiplinger’s Personal Finance.
Recession Killed Your Retirement Funds
Scenario: Your retirement savings were cut nearly in half during the recession. The market seems to be improving, but you’re still uncertain.
What you can do: If you’re considering retirement and you’ve lost close to a third or more of your retirement savings, you may have taken on much more risk than you can handle. Find out whether you’re too old to be mostly invested in stocks or other high risk investments and adjust the way your retirement funds are allocated. You’ll want to minimize risk by investing conservatively. If you need help, find a certified financial planner.
You’ve Lost Your Pension
Scenario: Your pension plan has been discontinued and you’re worried that, without it, you may not have enough money to retire when you want to.
What you can do: First, find out whether your pension plan has been terminated or frozen.
It may seem counter intuitive, but you may be better off if your employer goes bankrupt than if your pension is just frozen or shrunk. That’s because employee pensions with companies filing for bankruptcy are covered by the government's Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation, notes The Motley Fool. That means you should still be able to receive some if not all of what you’re due.
You Have Too Much Debt
Scenario: You have a substantial amount of mortgage or credit card debt which you’ll have to continue to pay off for the next several years.
What you can do: First, cut down on unnecessary spending to free up cash to pay the bills. Consider downsizing to a smaller home that’s cheaper to maintain. Next, use a debt reduction calculator to find out how long it will take you to pay off your debts. If paying down your debts seems impossible, get help from a reputable credit counseling agency via the National Foundation for Credit Counseling.
Out of Hand Expenses
Scenario: You’re concerned about covering all of your day-to-day expenses.
What you can do: Use an online calculator to determine how much you might be spending on utilities, health care, travel, meals, hobbies, gifts and other expenses. Next, identify what you’re willing to cut down on. For instance, if you still own the home that your children grew up in, you may be spending too much just for heating and cooling and could save money and energy just focusing on the rooms you usually occupy.
Drastic Measures to Pay the Bills
Scenario: You’re not a big spender, but in order to pay your bills during retirement, you might have to sell your home, get a reverse mortgage or take other drastic measures to get by.
What you can do: Downsizing your home might not be a bad idea and a reverse mortgage might give you an income in retirement if you’re not planning to leave your home to your heirs, but if you may end up struggling to make ends meet, you may want to reconsider retirement.
But that doesn’t mean work stress has to continue to wear you down. It’s never too late to consider a career change that could lead to more gratifying and enjoyable work. Plus, older people who have switched careers tend to have more flexible work schedules than in their previous jobs, according to AARP, meaning you could still have time to enjoy semi-retirement.
You Have Health Coverage Concerns
Scenario: You’ve got Medicare or you qualify for it when you retire, but you’re not sure if you can cover prescription drug costs.
What you can do: The easiest thing you can do to cut your prescription drug costs is to switch to generics. Beyond that, you can consider Medicare Part D, a prescription drug plan for which you’ll have to pay a monthly premium, but it could save you substantial amounts of money.
And if you’re on a limited income, drug companies may even provide you with free or cheap medications via the Partnership for Prescription Assistance.
You Like to Spend
Scenario: You see retirement as your time to live the good life, but you’re not sure if you’ll have enough to cover all of the cruises, early-bird specials and other outings you envision for your life after work.
What you can do: If you’re in relatively good health now, you may want to work a bit beyond 65 to help you afford little luxuries – and actually be able to enjoy them - when you finally do retire. Or consider part-time work. Online job search sites like RetirementJobs.com specialize in jobs for people over age 50.
You Need to Keep Busy
Scenario: You’re considering retirement, but you’re the type of person who needs to stay busy and feel productive.
What you can do: If you’re not as concerned about being able to afford retirement as you are about keeping yourself sharp and spry in your later years, volunteering is a great way to stay productive and social while still maintaining an easy and flexible schedule. AARP has a Web site where the retirement-aged can search for worthwhile volunteering opportunities.

Remember, YOU are amazing!

No One on Earth
Exits quite like you
And no one is able
To do what you do
The person you are
The talents you bear
Gifts that only
You can share
Only you have learned
From the things you've done
Gaining perspective
From the battles you've won
Times when you've lost
Have been priceless too
The lessons contribute
To what makes you you
The rest of the the world
Can't see through your eyes
Which is why your insight
Is such a prize
Because you are you
There are lives you affect
Much more than you
Would ever expect
The things you do
The things you say
Send ripples throughout
The Milky Way
You're unique, amazing
Like no one else
You have the exclusive
On being yourself.
The Only You poem is one of people's favorites from the book The Elusive Here & Now.
