First Quarter Report Cards
My husband and I had the pleasure of picking up our daughter’s report card this past Wednesday. As usual, all A’s and B’s. Since preschool, we have always gone together to ensure the school knows that this child comes from a very involved and concerned household and that we are her staunchest advocates. Also, we let the school know that we are willing participants in this teacher/parent partnership of educating our daughter the very best of her potential. We leave no stone unturned in getting her the tools necessary to succeed.
I am not saying this to brag or boast, but to make the point that as parents, we control our children’s educational destiny. It is very sad to hear that many parents don’t bother to show up Report Card pick up day. Citing, I can’t take off work, they’ll send it in the mail. Yes, our children must have the mindset and willingness to learn, but we must steer them towards a life of learning. If they don’t have that mindset, we must find the tools to help them overcome their educational challenges. We must provide guidance and leadership in helping them understand this world, not just the United States. The children growing up today will inherit the most diverse population the world has ever seen and minorities will be 60% of the world’s population in less than 20 years.
Therefore, we must be examples and role models for our children. They must see us reading, doing crossword puzzle, exercising, and most importantly eating healthy. Children learn by example. No matter what happens, people remember the bad before they remember the good. Children are labeled bad, before they are labeled good.
The disparity in education across the State of Illinois is appalling and no matter if our children are in the “good schools”, we all need to complain until the level field is leveled for all children regardless of color and socio-economic standing. My daughter is in incredible Chicago Public School and she has surpassed all the ISAT standards for two years. However, think about it. When they talk about minority children having lower test scores, they don’t talk about the children that are surpassing the standards, first. Let’s use all our resources, gifts, and time to make education a priority for all minority children. If you know parents that are overwhelmed, step in and become a part of their village. Everyone needs help now and then. Especially the children.
Peace and Love,
