I Choose

I greatly enjoy the music of India Arie. Her lyrics are usually right on point in so many ways. A number of years back, when I was “getting myself together”, I had figured out that happiness and many other things in life, were a choice. So when I heard her song, I Choose, it absolutely resonated with me. It is from the Testimony: Vol. 1, Life & Relationship album. From the first strains of “Because you never know where life is gonna take you and you can't change where you've been. But today, I have the opportunity to choose.” I thought YES! You can’t change where you’ve been! But you can choose. I then heard her sing, “I done been through some painful things I thought that I would never make it through, filled up with shame from the top of my head to the soles of my shoes. I put myself in so many chaotic circumstances, but by the grace of God I've been given so many second chances. But today I decided to let it all go. I'm dropping these bags I'm making room for my joy.” HEYYYYY! That’s right! I was still wrestling with shame and knew firsthand about God’s grace! When I heard “And I choose, to be the best that I can be. I choose to be authentic in everything I do. My past don't dictate who I am. I choose.” WOOOOO! I must have played that song 10 times full blast. My neighbors probably thought I had lost it. I was singing and dancing! It was great! There are other excellent lyrics in the song about being too concerned with what others think, living for yourself, making decisions, and changing who you are. I’m not sure what events in India’s life birthed these lyrics, but I am glad that it produced this song. It’s an awesome anthem of liberty and taking a stand.
