Hobo’s Question of the Day:

Quoting one of my favorite singers, Marvin Gaye, I have to ask the question “What’s going on”? I am referring to what is going on with our world today and have we as a culture/society completely gone “crazy”?

I ask this question because recently at my place of work I had the opportunity to speak with young adults (17-24) who have recently had run-ins with the law or have very extensive backgrounds with crime and arrests.

Just last week I had a discussion with a young man who was trying (unsuccessfully) to explain to me the idea of the no “snitching” rule (belief). The young man told me that he had recently lost his father to gang violence and that it was almost a year ago that his brother was killed.

He told me that not only did he know the individuals who killed his brother, but people in his neighborhood knew who killed his father; however no one was going to inform the authorities about what they knew. He also stated that he had no intentions of “revenge” nor was he going to speak out against the persons who had murdered his family members or going to the authorities himself. He stated that it was not “in my blood to snitch” and the reason for so much recent crime and killing in the cities is a result of too many people snitching and no longer having any honor or “respect for the game”.

So, my question is, am I truly naive and do I no longer understand the way society behaves? Is it naive of me to believe that love and respect for your neighbor should be a rule instead of “no snitching”? Finally, does anyone else believe in the old saying “what’s done in the dark always comes to the light”?

Looking for answers,
Hobo
